From Ericka Watson, About.com Guide   June 29, 2010

If someone asked you, could you accurately articulate the Coast Guard regulations for where the registration numbers on the boat are placed?  Do you know what the requirements are in general, or even specifically?

As boaters, we tend to take certain things for granted.  Like where to place registration numbers.  It seems simple, but in fact, the Coast Guard has specified the type of letters to use, the color, how high they must be and where to place them on the boat as well as where to afix the state sticker.  Since being cited by the Coast Guard during a routine boarding for not having the numbering correct is a possibility, why not brush up on boat registration lettering and numbering information here:

Prior to affixing your registration numbers you should also consult your state regulations. For example, Indiana stipulates the segmentation as well as spacing. Also, the excise tax decal must be to the right of the number. http://www.boat-ed.com/in/handbook/register.htm#display
