Boating Lessons: Three Ways to Stop Boat Mildew

Wednesday June 24, 2009
If you have a boat, then you are battling the scourge of mildew or you will battle it in the future. Since mildew thrives in dark, moist and warm environments, boats are the ideal candidate for mildew spores to colonize and prosper. Here are three way to stop mildew on your boat:

  1. Do your best to keep things clean, dry and open. Before leaving your boat for a length of time, prop open storage lockers and turn cushions on their side. When storing gear, don't pack it in too tightly. Instead, allow air to flow around. Also, don't stow gear until it is thoroughly dry.

  2. Ventilate your boat as much as possible. Install small vents in your interior and cockpit lockers to encourage airflow. Installing rainproof vents will also circulate air throughout your boat. Special bags made of absorptive clay will also trap airborne moisture and protect against mildew.

  3. To prevent mildew from colonizing, clean areas that are prone to mildew with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. If mildew has already formed, clean it with a solution of equal parts bleach and water.
