Find a Hurricane Hole for Your Boat

By August 17, 2008

Tropical Storm warnings are in effect for the Florida Keys, and a Hurricane Watch has been issued for southwest Florida as Tropical Storm Fay crosses Cuba and heads into the Straits of Florida. If you plan to anchor your boat to ride out the storm, first find a "hurricane hole."

The best hurricane hole is one that provides a strong anchoring bottom, protection from the wind, and is far enough inland to provide protection from storm surge. Mangroves can provide excellent shelter from the storm, as you can see in the picture. Florida Keys residents choose mangroves as their hurricane hole during a recent hurricane.
