Triumph Boats With Cracked Hulls?
Steve from Australia is interested in purchasing a Triumph boat, but is a little leary about internet conversation regarding Triumphs with cracked hulls. Since Triumph's slogan is "the world's toughest boats," it's understandable that he would want a little clarification.
I recently wrote a Triumph boat review, so I'm also interested to know if any Triumph owners have experienced cracked hulls, or what your experience has been with this manufacturer.

I have owned a 190 Bay Triumph since new in March of 2004. I have never had any issues with the hull. The only problem we have had with the ropelene is screws have a tendency to back out on the decks but I believe they have since modified construction to remedy this. We just keep vigilant screwing them back in. We towed her behind our 60′ over 1800 miles from Florida to South America in some pretty snotty weather and she held up just fine.
Oh, and they have a lifetime guarantee.
Steve, I’ve owned the 150CC Triumph since 2005 and know several others who own them, I know of no cracking. My boat is stored outside with a tarp over it and I’ve seen no deterioration of the hull.
I fish this little rig hard up here in Northern California, last year per my GPS I logged 580 miles on it, caught everything from Halibut to Tuna.
It is the easiest boat to maintain I’ve ever owned. Deck screws are an easy fix, cleanup just takes some soap and a strong spray of water or a pressure washer. My only gripe is I didn’t get the 17 footer and the fish boxes are not large enough to hold all the fish I catch. http://humboldttuna.com
One last thing. There are some sites that are inhabited by Triumph haters, keep in mind they are a loud minority.
They are great small boats, they are not perfect nor indestructable they will however take (IMHO) more “Normal” punishment than fiberglass or aluminum boats all things being equal.
I purchase a new 170 dc and the hull is warped at the bow. It doesn’t affect performance, and the hull integrity seems to be ok, but with less than 10hrs on the hull, I’m trying to swap like for like, however the dealer is reluctant to do so…still negotiating.
Mike V – just out of curiosity, why is the dealer reluctant to swap? That doesn’t seem right to me with only 10 hours on the hull.
I have a Triumph 170dc and couldn’t be happier. I have had many boats in my 65 years and this is one of the best!
I have a 2001 Logic 190 Bay (Triumph purchased Logic) that I use to go back and forth to my cottage on Lake Ontario. We have to cross through the Kingston harbor and out into the lake a distance of 6 miles. It is common to be out in 3-4 foot waves and I have been also caught in this boat in a quick storm that churned up 6 footers quite quickly. Three years ago a furious fall storm hit, ripping the cleats out of the boat and pushing it up on the rocky shore. It took five guys the size of Goliath to get it off during the storm and secure it back onto the dock. When I inspected it the next day, expecting to see major damage or even a right-off situation, I was shocked to see only 3 or 4 minor scratches which turned out to be an easy fix. The cleat repair was also quite easy and inexpensive to fix. The boat came through this storm amazingly, but the customer service at Triumph left a great deal to be desired, as they were not helpful at all. They were in the process of closing their dealer network here in Canada and would not give me the name of a dealer in upstate New York in the Thousand Island area but rather sent me to one 220 miles north on Toronto who had no idea how to fix the problem and I had to instruct him how to get the parts and material from Triumph after doing some research. Seven months after the incident I discovered a New York state Thousand Island dealer about 20 miles from my cottage who apologized for what I went through and then bent over backwards to help. The boat still runs perfectly and I can honestly say that I love taking her out in the roughest of seas, knowing full well that it can take it and even make the going fun at the same time.
I bought a used 2002 190 bay and love it. I also participate on the Triumph OWNERS site. If anyone wants to ask an owner for a review-go to http://www.triumphowners.net/
as a guest and ask one. My user name is BigBird. Send me a vistor message and I will help how I can
Owners know better than anyone else about the quality of their boats. In my experience Triumph is a committed mfg and supports its owners. If you have authorized dealer problems contact Triumph directly.
You have a real good concern their. I have spent way too many hours researching the the 190 Bay and probably made my wife mad one too many times from being on the computer. First let me tell you that it is true that Triumph boats, particularly the 190 can crack. Is it the ropolean? No. Is the the sun or weather conditions? No. Is it the huge hammers or 50 foot drops on the concrete? No. When Triumph switched from Logic there was a lot of research, some by trial and error, that went into these boats. Unfortunately one of the items that failed from the old models were on the 190 Bay. First, the trail they put these boats on did not support the boat well enough. The material is made to withstand the harshest conditions but if not supported correctly it can develop a crack in the front right hull. Also, in the 02 models before they switched the scupples from the side to the rear had some issues with cracking. They have since cured all these problems on their newer models. What did they do with the old ones. Well, I recently bought an 03 with a 1inch crack in the hull knowing it was a lifetime warranty. I called Triumph and they are not only fixing the crack by remaking that portion of the boat, but they are upgrading/modifying the trailer, which there was a recall on, up to standard. The dealer I took it to says after these fixes they are like new and he has never seen any problems with them afterwards. So…to make a long story longer, the trailer supported the rear and the front and basicly streched the hull over time and trainlering enough to produce a crack. I have owned previous fiberglass boats and can tell you that if trailered incorrectly can cause damage also. All that being said I would absolutely buy another Triumph over and over. Along with the boat you are buying an amazing fleet of customer service and generaly great gals and guys. I will have my boat back in a week or two and can’t wait to get back to those bay bass calling my name.
I have a 2002 190 Bay with center console I run a 115 Merc.
I have never had a problem with hull. I have ran it to Frying Pan Tower approx. 40 miles out. Came back in 3 to 5 foot seas. felt safer in it than I have in other boats.

I was interested to read the comments on the question of TRIUMPH hulls cracking. As with any new material there should always be concern about quality and issues of failure.
TRIUMPH has proven themselves to be made of the ‘right stuff’. For decades canoes and kayaks have been made with polyethlene as the preferred material to deal with the harsh environment of raging rapids because it is tougher than aluminum or fibreglass and floats.
We, North Country Marine, Kingston, Ontario area http://www.northcountrymarine.ca recently signed up as a dealer for TRIUMPH. We are enjoying much success with the product in sales and satisfaction of the purchasers.
We are working on becoming a ‘Master’ dealer to deal with any and all issues of the TRIUMPH boat line. We’re ready to serve you.
I have an 02 21cc..up until last year I would have put it up against any of the big boys, but I have recently had the floor crack and the floor has become spongy…both sides of the boat has developed waffelling it was not there when I bought it they tried to fix it and it is still noticable..I asked for a new hull replacement denied, the customer service people seem to be arrigant, his response was we make the toughest boat not the prettiest, I guess I have to live with it, buyer beware
I have a 17cc with T-top. I love the boat but yes these boats do crack if exposed to rough water. I have a couple long cracks in the sidewalls.
I have a 215cc that I bought new in ‘06. I have had no issues with it and it has performed great in fairly heavy seas in and around new york habor. I highly recommend.
Off the subject off cracked hulls I have a 2000 17cc with an 80 hp yamaha 4 stroke, this boat has a bad lean to the left(port)under power has anyone had this or know of a fix. Had a go around with the factory back in 2000 no help they also did not care.
I just bought a 2003 190 bay with a 115 4 str yammy….before I bought the boat all I read was how Triumphs were indestructable and had a lifetime warranty…since then all Ive read is how they can break sitting on the trailer and the lifetime warranty is limited to the first buyer and transfered once in the first 5 yrs. I missed that. It is on Triumphs site but you have to look for it.
Now on triumphs behalf they did upgrade my trailer for free beyond any warranty, The 2008 model year has a better lifetime warranty, maybe they got the kinks out.
Time will tell whether I buy another triumph, I do wish people would not say they have lifetime warranty’s and add the word “limited”
I have a 2002 190bay . Just got back from dropping the boat off at the boat shop again . The bow eye has cracked through the hull for the third time . Other than that i am satisfied with the boat.
I have a 21.5 Triumph purchase two years ago I had a few minor problem with my boat, dealer was great dealing with it, but not triumph boat manufacture, they are extremely hard to deal with. these boats are great when the water is ruff, you will bounce around much less with a Triumph. ruff water she will bring you home.
Have had 2. 1 Logic 02 Typical hull leaks loose screws.Drill added drains in transom. see Triumph owners site for instructions and pictures on how to do this. Trailer was improper causing hull warping factory send repair brace that did not fit. to fix it. other than that was a fairly good boat. 2nd a disaster a LEFTOVER 04 SINGLE CONSOLE PURCHASED ADDED CONSOLE And FULL CUSHION SET FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Long drive from Daytona. Boat broak down 1st time and every time but one it was put in water. 4 Trips to dealers 2 different ones. Waited months and months waiting for more and more parts. Last time I got it back from dealer Battery was dead 2nd time for this. Charged $17.50 for 800 phone call to factory. Tack had worked, now it did not work, fuel gauge did not work right. An I would not risk another break down sold it Suing them Lemon Law. Triumph Lawyer states they are going to sue both of us I an my lawyer also for false claims ect. Buyer beware. Now have a Sea Hunt. Same size 18′6″, same set up duel consul. 115 yamaha. 1 yr No breakdowns Nothing for manufacture to fix O, Nada. Use 2-3x a week 1 oil change. can’t beat it. Peace of mind for a few bucks more.
I have 03 21cc currently being held in Croatia. All in all up to this moment I am satisfied with boat and when compare to other fiberglass boat of same size it is of very good quality and rugged. Only boat that I like in the same way (or maybe more) is Boston Whaler but at the other price point. Also, few times have been through very bad weather/strong bura (wind) waves cca 10-12 ft without problem. With some other boat of same size i would not do that…
From Houston, TX: Bought a Logic 210CC new in 2003. Had it in the water a few times, no problem. In early 2005 noticed 2 vertical cracks (2-3 in long each) on transom starting at the keel. Called Triumph and they scheduled a repair technician to fix it at a dealership in Beaumont, TX (about 60 miles away from Houston). Fix went fine, took the boat out a couple more times before Hurricane Rita came by. Did not get to use boat again until last summer (July 2008). Took it out twice last year for short rides in Galveston Bay. Hurricane Ike put a stop to further rides. Early this year (2009) noticed another vertical crack next to the ones that had been repaired earlier. Now I can’t get any help because Genmar is in Chapter 11 and no longer has a tech that can fix it. Triumph sent me a tube of marine repair putty and a couple of blocks of teflon to patch it with once I apply the putty. They said that is the best they can do for now. Said maybe if they come out of bankruptcy they might be able to fix it but apologized to me. Well, that’s all good and well but that doesn’t help me. I don’t want to chance going out to sea to fish if I have to worry about it leaking again once I attempt a repair. I just spent a lot of money getting the engine ready for this boating season and that was before I found out about Genmar’s financial situation. Great Boat, but I am stuck with it now. Can’t afford to sell it now that it is almost all paid off (unless I am willing to give it away). Anybody got any suggestions? Know of any repair kits?
I have had a 170CC for seven seasons in NJ for fishing (mostly) and absolutely love it! We have been caught in some rough, hard water and we run it hard (my boys like bouncing around on waves and wakes). So far no problems at all! I would, and have, recommended them to everyone who asks.
Purchased a new 2004 190 bay. In October 2008, the boat developed a 2-3 foot open hull crack that went from starboard, under the boat, and across to the port side along with one other small crack. We took on hundreds of gallons of water but stayed afloat. I was told by Triumph the hull crack was due to a manufacturing defect during the molding process compounded by the incorrect support the original trailer provided. Triumph was great in fixing the cracks. I was told the repaired hull would be stronger than new. However, in August 2009, after only 4 months after the repair, I noticed an additional 6 inch crack in the original roplene, in the area of the initial problems. I will be contacting Triumph to see how they plan to address these continuing problems with the hull. I now question the integrity of the hull as repairs lasting only 4 months are mot acceptable.
Alot of people have negative comments but more have positive comments. This is a great boat line yes its new so yes some people will complain but is this the way of the future yes. How many boats can out perform this boat NONE! It is the toughest boat in the world and its dry. i will give you a new report to post ask the world and the bloggers with boats has you boat saved you life if so list your boats maker name.
I have a 190 bay I bought new in 02. IT now has a crack in the hull causing the boat to take on water when i’m on the water. i called the 800 # for triumph and they told me my warrinty is voided for storing my boat in dry stack. MY boat has only been trailered a few times. I fish in new jersey where its been since 2004. the dry stack where i keep my boat is the same setup as my trailer so to void the warrinty makes no sense to me. It is simply two rug covered 2×6’s. If anyone can give me some guidence i would really appretiate it.
